Commercial Photography: Alexander Dennis

Posted on October 7th, 2015 by

Guildford based business, Alexander Dennis, recently commissioned me to photograph a factory tour.

The tour was an opportunity for ambassadors from 9 different countries to experience the vehicles for themselves and see them in production. Everyone was very impressed.

I changed lenses quite a lot during this shoot, as I wanted to achieve a variety of effects. Outside I needed to get over the size of the vehicles so needed a wide angle lens.

Inside, I changed to a zoom lens to capture facial expressions without becoming intrusive.

Throughout the day I was photographing every aspect from small details to tours of the factory. I was keen to reflect how the visitors felt. It really emphasises just how important it is, though, to have the right tools for each project.

The images will be used for various news stories and marketing, as well as a great chance to add another chapter in the company’s history to their archives.

And that raises a good point… Just how good are we at thinking about recording key events and creating a legacy for our business? It is great to have these images, and they can always be “dusted off” each time you celebrate a key birthday.

Marketing pays…

I was delighted to get a phone call from a specialist media company based in Poole, recently. They wanted a local photographer to shoot an ad campaign they had launched in Basingstoke.

They found me through Google, and really liked what they saw on my website. I was absolutely delighted. It just goes to show the value of having a professional website, and continuing to invest in your marketing. For me, it is a great chance to thank Gregor and all the team at Mass Media Design, and Nicky Parker from Bang Consulting, for my website and marketing.

The campaign was to promote the children’s character Sponge Bob Square Pants and was based around shopping centre lifts. A very different venture for me, but really good fun!

Helping to connect people

Posted on September 1st, 2015 by

A few weeks ago I was asked to photograph a new networking group that started up around a year ago. Magnum Connections meets every week, but unlike other groups they don’t accept start ups or trades. They also focus on bringing extra value with interesting speakers giving inspirational talks, and member benefits that help to recoup the cost of membership.

They have three venues and I visited all of them, to shoot the members and the venues ready for their new website. They also wanted the images for other marketing purposes.

Commercial photography

I was given a very loose brief, which might sound great, but can be rather frustrating when you are not clear about the end plan.

Commercial photography

They specifically asked for all the head shots to be taken against a white background. That’s a real toughie, as it really strips the colour out of people’s skin, and takes away the more natural approach that I prefer. I certainly needed to do some Photoshop work to warm and soften the images.

Each venue was different, so the lighting needed to be adjusted each time. I took a mixture of shots to reflect the ethos of the group – showing off the beautiful venues, the breakfast kick off, and the meetings in action.

Despite the early starts three mornings on the trot, it was good fun, and great to meet such a nice group of people.

The new website is now live, and I’m delighted to see so many of the images being put to good use.

Vintage Motoring for Charity

Posted on August 27th, 2015 by

I have recently been working with a local charity The Ark Cancer Centre. The charity is looking to raise a substantial sum towards building a bespoke cancer centre offering familiar cancer treatments as well as alternative therapies for patients. It is the brain child of eminent consultant surgeon Mr Merv Rees.

event photography

As part of their fundraising they ran a vintage car day, and asked me to photograph the event. It was great fun, and everybody really entered into the spirit of the occasion.

event photography

From a photography perspective, it was a very interesting challenge. There was a meal inside the Ark Centre, with the usual indoor lighting issues – you know I always love to use natural light where possible. All artificial lighting is harsh and often throws very unflattering colours on people’s skin.

Event photography

The car rally rendezvoused at the prestigious Highclere Castle (where Downton Abbey is filmed). It was a great opportunity to capture some of the stunning architecture as well as the wonderful cars.

The images were being used to raise awareness of the charity and also helped to raise money. I was able to print on site for guests to buy and take away, so an immediate souvenir of a great occasion.

Shooting for Time Out

Posted on August 17th, 2015 by

Sometimes, we need to focus our minds, not just our cameras. I find, during difficult moments in life, giving my mind a rest from the stress around me is a must.

For me, and I hope for you too, the camera helps to soothe and calm. Photographing the garden, or a favourite place, allows time to focus on the beauty surrounding us, as well as the chance to practise using different lenses and lighting.

Photographing nature

Whilst you may have ideas on what you want to achieve with your camera, be willing to go with the way nature wants to take you. Be patient and quiet, because wildlife is shy and moves quickly!

Photography tuition

Do your homework, so you know how to use shutter speeds and aperture values, as well as the right lens, for your project. But don’t worry if you don’t have lots of equipment – you can still get some fabulous results. Using some basic rules will still get you a perfect shot.

Nature photography, photography tuition

If you’re still baffled by the technology of your camera, or just fancy some time out, then why not book a day of 1 to 1 tuition with me? We’ll have a super stress free time!

Home is where the Heart is!

I was really excited when I got this commission, because it is something very different for me.

I know the lovely Sue Webborn from the Women in Business Group. She approached me as she wanted to sell her house privately, and wanted some great images to show it off.

Residential photography

Before I got cracking with the camera, I spent some time talking to Sue and exploring the house. She shared little secret corners and particular features of the property so I had some great ideas when it came to the shoot.

House photography

By viewing the house first, I was able to plan how I would get the best shots. The use of ladders etc to get different view points.

When it came to the shoot, I wanted to make the most of natural light where possible. I captured quirky little details that really showed the essence of the cottage.

residential photography

Sue talked about the emotional pull of selling your home. Opening up the place where you are at your most private can be very personal. Of course, the upsides are that you can control viewing times, and you don’t have estate agency fees.

Commercial photography: Professional people shots

Trisha Ridsdale recently contacted me, as she wanted to refresh her marketing photographs. We agreed it would be best if I shot her in her working environment, and took a range of images, so she had plenty to choose from.

Head shots, commercial photography

As you can see, I have gone for some relatively formal shots, as well as more relaxed action images.

Commercial photography: Teamwork pays

I was asked to provide some images for a new soft furnishings business, which I was really excited about.

I didn’t want to simply provide before & after shots of rooms/windows but to give a flavour of what the business owner offers, and how she works.

commercial photography

This was a great opportunity for me to enter the working environment and shoot what I see. Before the camera came out, we had a coffee and a chat about ideas and what was needed. Then I assessed the light in the room, to see if I needed reflectors or additional lighting.

commercial photography

Then out came the camera. It was very relaxed, with us working as a team, to accomplish the brief we had agreed.

commercial photography

The result is ‘real’ images that truly reflect the business. Plus seeing things from an outsider’s perspective can produce some interesting photographs, which often make very powerful marketing images…

Commercial photography: Royal approval for client

Posted on December 15th, 2014 by

One of my clients, Elekta, has been awarded the Queen’s Award for Industry in International Trade, for the third year in a row.

Naturally, they wanted to capture such a momentous occasion, so yours truly hotfooted it to West Sussex to oblige.

commercial photography

Of course, it was important to make sure I got all the right people on camera – HRH Duke of Gloucester, Deputy Lieutenant of West Sussex Carole Hayward and Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex. This means having to be in the right place at the right time with the right lens on the camera – not always as easy as it sounds!

commercial photography

The rain poured down, but everyone was determined to have a good time. For me, the weather added another challenge particularly with both indoor and outdoor lighting.

commercial photography

I really enjoyed working with both a film and lighting crew on this shoot – capturing images and the occasion for marketing and the company archives.

Lifestyle photography: Tristan

Posted on December 8th, 2014 by

I recently had the pleasure of photographing a very promising young pianist and media composer – Tristan Noon. We are building a library of images of his early years as a budding composer and performer.

Tristan is a hugely talented guy and has written music for some exciting projects, including the ITN Nativity Factor and ‘Countdown to Murder’ for Channel 5.

lifestyle photography

He is very ambitious and focused on developing his career as a composer of theme scores for television and drama.

lifestyle photography

The lighting in the images is kept deliberately dark to set the mood of him being in his composing ‘zone’.

lifestyle photography

I try to think in black and white to mentally focus on shape, form and contrast. This is very different to my usual work, which is refreshing. And it’s great to hear music while I am working – two composers in harmony!

lifestyle photography

I just love the moody artistic feel to these images, and hope you do too.

If you’d like some different images of you at work or play, please contact me on 01256 417 321.
